  • Lobo … rum punch … and Playa de Sosua

Posted on October 29th, 2009 Admin No comments

I know, I’ve been negligent in posting lately but I’ve been busy looking for another place to live and on “Dominican time” that takes a while, as I’m sure those of you who have been to the DR know.

At any rate, I decided to take off today from a day of errands, reading, writing and interviewing to spend the afternoon at Playa de Sosua, also known as Sosua Beach. It’s beautiful … the pictures don’t do it justice. You have to see it to believe the calm waters, the boats cruising back and forth carrying passengers who want a glimpse of the underwater life, and the countless vendors who are walking back and forth from beachcomber to beachcomber. There are even guitarists who will serenade you … I’m not into that, so I brought along my down-home blues on my iPod and had a great time!

The owner of the hotel where I’m staying offered to drive me to the beach, and once he discovered I was interested in more than just perusing the amazing shopping venues, he took me by my hand to introduce me to “Lobo” who is one of the nicest guys I’ve met in the Dominican Republic.

The owner apparently has a long-standing friendship with Lobo, and as such, Lobo does everything he can possibly do to please the hotel owner’s guests. Lobo shook my hand, and addressed me as “senorita” before ushering me to a lounge chair. The owner had told him I wanted braids, and Lobo arranged that. I swear, this mother-daughter team is the best I’ve seen in all the years I’ve worn braids! What took eight hours in Kansas City took 90 minutes in Sosua for less than one-fourth the Kansas City price! I was very satisfied … much more so than my experience at the salon last Friday. I will certainly wear these braids for several weeks. They are beautiful.

I had no idea that Lobo was actually my personal “beach concierge” … anything I wanted, he was there to provide with a gracious smile. I first needed an ice cold Presidente (grande’ of course) and there he was with a large bottle of beer. I guess we’d call it a “forty” at home … LOL … with a glass because I am, after all, a lady and a lady’s lips never touch the bottleneck.

Then the mother-daughter team began braiding my hair, but after a while the mother said “tu tiene mucho pelo” meaning my hair was too thick for her to handle, so she left the job for her daughter, Ingris. I was so impressed with the artistry with with Ingris braided my hair, we exchanged numbers, and she offered to tighten my braids as necessary during my stay in the Dominican Republic.

Interestingly, Ingris and her mother clarified for me the concept of race in the Dominican Republic, using me as their subject. They told me that my skin tone is classified as moreno which means brown and is not necessarily bad, it just means I am “colored” in a way that is not offensive. On the other hand, they said my hair — in its natural state — is muy mal pelo which means “bad hair” also known as “nappy hair” but let’s get one thing straight for Don Imus, especially: I am not a nappy-headed ho. Sort of like the opposite of what Chris Rock’s new film is all about: I don’t have ‘good hair’ which is perfectly alright with me because it’s healthy, free from chemical processes and easy to manage.

For Dominicans, race, class and culture are curiously and uniquely identified by hair texture. But, now that I have long braids to the middle of my back (with the extensions), my hair is considered not too bad. Ingris told me some, but not very many, Dominican women are returning to the natural hair with which they were born. That excites me! Why? It shows there is a level of consciousness and acceptance of the African ancestry from which many Dominicans descend.

Let me get back to Lobo, though … handsome man with friendly smile …

Having one’s personal concierge at the beach may appear at first glance to be rather pretentious, but it’s a very practical way to spend hours relaxing. During the five hours I was there, Lobo provided me with cerveza, a seat from which the sand was cleared, a footrest, lunch, two cocktails and the offer to shield me from onlookers should I decide to remove the clothing I wore over my swimsuit in order to swim.

Lunch was fried fish, rice, beans and salad, which was delicious. I ate like it was the first “home-cooked” meal I’d had since arriving here. Well, it was essentially home-cooked because it wasn’t produced by a chain restaurant — not even a commercial kitchen … the fish was cooked to perfection with the head and tail attached. It’s a good thing the eyes were removed, though, because I couldn’t have possibly eaten pescado that looking at me which I’m devouring it.

Later, Lobo brought me ice cold water so that I wouldn’t be dehyrdrated. Keep in mind, all of my utensils were flatware, the plates actual china and real glasses for my beers and cocktails. Once my hair was finished, Lobo moved my lounge chair closer to the shore where I soak up the sun with y accelerator tanning oil, and though he asked if I would like a massage, I declined. As a poor student, my budget is limited, you know.

Finally, once I’ve relaxed in sun, listening to some old-school, down-home blues on my iPod … grown folks’ music, you know … Johnnie Taylor and his son, Floyd Taylor; Willie Clayton; Millie Jackson; and, Clarence Carter … I’m so deep into my groove, it’s a damn shame!

It’s time to kick it up a notch … so Lobo then brings me an ashtray and a delicious rum punch. And then, another rum punch. What a life … this is the way I want to live when I grow up!

Okay … here’s the surprise … I ask Lobo how much I owe him at the end of my stay at the beach because the sun is beginning to set and he says “is 900 pesos too much?” I didn’t say it aloud because he wouldn’t have gotten the joke, but the infamous Whitney Houston response almost rolls off my tongue: “Hell to the Nawwwhhh !” As of today’s exchange rate, 900 pesos is roughly $25. I’ve had personalized service from a gentleman, two cocktails, the equivalent of four beers, a full lunch and the kind of attentiveness that a sistah can’t just get everywhere!

This is truly the life …

I’m closing for now because with my new, I’m going out dancing and flirting tonight. This is a requirement. Dancing, shooting pool, winking and a little bit of drinking are on the agenda for this evening. I don’t want to stay out past curfew though!

Adios, amigos! Enjoy your Friday night … ’cause I know I’m going to enjoy mine!
